With our Second Screen event, the challenge was getting the first screen working, turned out to be a dodgy HDMI replicator that was the fault, but we soldiered on.

The start to the event was a few words from our Sponsor of the night, Nick Gallon of the BBC, who had graciously put us in Quay House, overlooking the Docks, and laid on refreshments.

First up to speak, was Ryan Norton, talking about what the BBC has been looking at, and piloting, covering a range of technologies, from Watermarking, Synced live, to audio detection. Great to hear what the BBC have been doing – a link to be provided soon to their content.

Second up was Paul Rawlings from Screen Reach Interactive, covering some of the interactive second screen experiences. From swiftcover billboard game, through to football stadium surveys.

Finally we had Jeff Coghlan, from Matmi, explaining some of their experiences, with multi screen gaming, what they have been doing with TVs, and how they are integrating the experiences going forward.

After the presentations, the questions from the floor covered topics such as how to generate revenue, how to make sure the second screen apps are found, the value of advertising in this space, and also data protection.

Big Thanks to the speakers, and looking forward to the next session.

As you may already be aware the Vodafone Foundation have set up the Smart Accessibility Awards:

http://developer.vodafone.com/smartaccess2011/

These awards are to celebrate apps that help people in four key areas: Social participation, independent living, mobility and well-being. They are free to enter and there is a prize fund of €200,000. The awards are now open for entries until 15 October 2011.

As part of this initiative, alongside our friends at Mobile Monday London, we’ve teamed up with the ICT KTN and Vodafone Foundation Smart Accessibility Awards to bring you a half-day workshop looking specifically at this area.

The goal of the workshops is to inspire and enable app developers and entrepreneurs to create useful tools for people who have visual, aural, cognitive or other impairments by helping you understand and empathize what life is like for people in this situation. This empathy and understanding is created by bringing together app developers, entrepreneurs and accessibility advocates and people with impairments to exchange information, and allowing developers to experience simulations of being impaired.

App developers who have had the opportunity to experience as directly as possible, first or second-hand, what it means to live with specific impairments, and have been put in touch with the larger community around accessibility, create more effective apps to better the quality of life for everyone. The result not only helps people with major disabilities, but also people with minor or temporary impairments, for example due to ageing or illness.

The format of the workshops will be discussion based and there will be technical people on hand to answer specific questions related to Android, but there will be different speakers and contributors to reflect the local scene. Plenty of time will be allowed for discussion and networking and refreshments will be provided.

We will be announcing our speakers over the next few days. Doors will open at 3pm for a 3.30pm start and we’ll be finishing around 8pm. The venue is Dukes 92, in castlefield.

This workshop is kindly hosted by Apadmi, and is in association with Vodafone Foundation Smart Accessibility Awards and ICT KTN.
PS. As is normal the attendee list will be shared with the supporting organisations:

Vodafone Smart Accessibility Awards. These are a new global awards to celebrate apps that help people in four key areas: Social participation, independent living, mobility and well-being. They are free to enter and there is a prize fund of €200,000. The awards are now open for entries until 15 October 2011.

ICT KTN: http://www.ictktn.org.uk. The ICT Knowledge Transfer Network has been established by an industry-led group of leading players, with funding from the Technology Strategy Board.

What were the strengths of the event? What did you find most useful or enjoyable and why?

As a newcomer and working in a different sector, I found this event highly engaging.

Good format, would have been better to have name/twitter details of speakers while they spoke

Introductions and panel questions worked very well

Wide range of views

Debate format worked really well

It was great to see passion about mobile

Very Informative

Good mix of folks and interesting panel

Strong opinions on the panel – diverse expertise

Good and Concise

Strengths: location, venue and panelists

Very strong debate and accessible to all

Good questions were put forth and answered to the point

Good panel of speakers from a variety of backgrounds (possibly one to many agencies)

Yes – very good topic which drew interest – Drinks were good too. -

There was a great turnout and plenty of questions –

The open panel discussion, the networking aspect

I found the presenters interesting on the way they enlighten a different perspective of the future of the mobile industry

Good selection of speakers – good venue

Learnt more about a good subject.

Range of panel speakers

Networking – general questions (Ie: panel needs to be shorter and sharper)

Opportunity to listen to all points of view. Good debate and lots too sales ‘pitches’.

Get some women – maybe a woman on the panel – (try girl geeks)

Overall some great feedback whch we are taking on board to help make future events even more successful.
